The finished project is available here, as a page for our client, Sturtz Construction.

The goal of the project was to demonstrate to small businesses how they could promote themselves on the Internet using either free or inexpensive tools. The project centered around inexpensive, yet professional looking video production using free software and consumer hardware, and using free web tools like WordPress, Youtube and Twitter to promote and distribute information about the company.

The project was headed by Prof. Bill Wolff of Rowan University.

Meet the Candidates was RTN’s second live streamed event, following the highly successful Rowan Relief Telethon.

Pardon the use of Flash as opposed to HTML5-compatible media. Technical limitations at this time make the reduce the viability MP4/OGV/WebM versions to nil. Standards-compliant video is due to be available by November.

The resulting video was one that attempted to showcase RTN’s broad range of positions for students to get involved in, while maintaining a level of kitsch. Video after the jump.

The promotion was shot in HD to teach the new members how to use the new HD camera, HD focus assist, working with P2, and dealing with the challenges of shooting in HD. The intent was to crop the promotion to a 4:3 box for use on the campus’s standard definition cable network. What is presented here is the 16:9 version produced, though the 4:3 cropped version is available in the download section.

Having no more than a few minutes forewarning, I decided to do a quick multi-cam job on the performance.

I ended up having to manually synchronize four video feeds, from an Apple iSight, a Nokia N73, a Motorola W490 (in 20-30 second clips), and a Canon PowerShot. I’m not entirely satisfied with the color correction I did, but I wanted to get a version online rather quickly so my friends could enjoy it and pass it around, so without further adieu, MJ:

Craig Monroe was the dean of Communications at Rowan University, and had a long history with a great many collegues across the country. In recognition of that, in partnership with the Rowan University IT department, the memorial service was streamed live.
I was in charge of operating the Tricaster, acting as director, technical director, VTR operator, audio operator, and to an extent, producer. What’s embedded here is the version we streamed live. We also had a third cameraman moving about with an HVX-200A armed with P2 cards to shoot additional footage, which we intend to edit together for any DVD requests we might have.
